... so maybe Rides of March.

I'm not going to 20 Mule Team. The truck is making a Mysterious Noise, and despite four visits to two mechanics, copious Internet Detecting, and asking my mechanically inclined friends, it's still making the Mysterious Noise. I have airbags, so what the fuck ever if it dies while I'm driving it, but I can't tow with it like this... and now I've spent all my ride money on trying to get it tow-worthy.

It sucks. It sucks so fucking much. I spent the last six months focused on this ride. I even set a conditioning schedule and stuck to it 100%. But this is just a hobby, and it's the price of being a grownup, and it happens to everybody at some point.

Please don't suggest that I check (or have the mechanic check) X or possibly Y. It doesn't matter anymore. But please feel free to share your tales of terrible disappointment!

And I suppose if I'm not going to Ridgecrest, I can get back to posting about random stuff. (Everybody has weird pre-ride superstitions; mine is that I get too nervous to blog. Not that it helped this time!)

  1. dang, dammit, blast it! My trailer is draining my truck battery in minutes, no idea what changes, maybe a short? Going in to the money-sucking shop this weekend. Sympathy and frustration with ya.

    1. My trailer will drain my truck battery if I leave it plugged in when the truck isn't running. I haven't gotten it fixed yet but one suggestion is there is a wire reversed somewhere. Maybe that's your issue?

  2. Terrible disappointment, I totally, totally TOTALLY get that. My sympathies.

  3. I read the title before reading the post and gigglesnorted because of all of your cursing about ROM in the past and all the absurd things you get into there. And then I read the post. And then I wanted to cry a little - okay, a lot - for you.

Maybe you can set up a mock 20 Mule Team ride in your home, mount a barbie on Banders and see if he makes it through the vet checks sound? No hauling required!

  4. My truck has also begun making a funny noise when starting up and while I think I know what it is, the cost of the repair is not something I can afford right now.

As far as tales of disappointment, I fear I'm about to have quite a few of those in my future. My current job is being somewhat shady and while I had hoped to be here until I hopefully start grad school in a year and a half they are making me wonder if that will happen. If I have to change jobs it is likely I will take a pay cut. If that happens my last year of conditioning and rehab will have been for naught as there will be very limited endurance in my future.

Sorry to hear about the ride disappointment. The price of being a grown up makes me often wish I could pretend to be a irresponsible teenager again.... but then I wouldn't have a horse as a teenager which would suck more than the price of responsibility.

  5. Bummer. Hate those technical difficulties!
I swear - isn't the frustration of not being capable of solving the problem yourself almost as bad as the inconvenience?

  6. Right there with you- my big truck just tanked its 3rd transmission since I bought it (2010). It's leaking a TON of fluid, so I'm hoping it's just a broken seal of some sort, but.... yeah. It's too cold to look at, right now. And I can't go anywhere if Cowboy has the 1500 with him at work or something.

Truck troubles suck. A lot. I'm sorry :(

  7. Truck troubles are the absolute worst. Mine just tanked its third transmission since 2010. No idea why it keeps eating them, not sure I want to put the money into finding out. I feel for you :(

  8. Sad for you. I have had a few deals lately where nothing I could do was going to change the fact that a much loved or much wanted thing was going to disappear. It's tough.

  9. Technical difficulties with vehicles suck. Chocolate and alcohol may help (you). I hope someone is able to solve it... AND SOON!

  10. Ugh, I HATE the mysterious noise! My truck made some funny noises recently too, and while they haven't been repeated, I suspect that somehow either my engine or transmission will die soon. I'm not one of those people who can always say The Right Thing, so I'll just leave it as - I'm so sorry you can't go on your ride, especially after all the hard work you've put in.

  11. I so feel your pain on this with the truck. In 2013 we spent a little over $9,000 in repairs on our Duramax Diesel truck. Believe me, if we had known at the first repair that by the end of the year we would be $9k into that damn truck we would have made different decisions. But for whatever reason one thing after another kept going wrong. There are a LOT of things I wanted to do with $9k other than truck repairs!! The real catch is that the truck has fairly low mileage (but is out of warranty of course!).

  13. I hate cars, and trucks, and well all vehicles. I'm sorry you are having these problems - hope you can get it figured out and soon! I love reading your adventures. :)

  14. Oh that bites it, bigtime. I second Jill, vehicles are just out to eat money that should be going into horses!
