Hey, do you hate the new two-word word verification like I do? GOOD. Let's turn it off. Blogger has made it very hard to turn off WV, but I have used the awesome powers of my new favorite search engine to figure out how to turn off the two impossible to read words.
I mean, assuming you're willing to turn on comment moderation - you will probably get Russian spammers if you turn off WV and don't have comment moderation on. It's not that big a deal to approve comments once a day (or every couple of days) - let me be your low-standards leader. Sometimes I approve them immediately, sometimes I forget for days at a time. Ain't no thang. Don't fear the comment moderation.
So! My persuasive skills have swayed you and you want to turn off the horrible word verification. Here's a blog post explaining how.
If that post gets deleted:
Go to your new blogger dashboard thing. Look for your name in the top right. Click the little gear under it. Go to Old Blogger Interface. Click on your blog name, then Settings, then Comments. Scroll down to Show Word Verification for Comments, and click No.
I am this close to migrating four years' worth of posts to Wordpress. I do not like the new interface; I am not real fond of Google right now, and now the stupid impossible to solve captcha? fffffffffffffddd
I've noticed that the captcha is about 99% impossible to read.
ReplyDeleteNow to see if my computing(lack of)knowledge will help me turn the bloody thing off...
Just turned mine off. The two word verification SUCKED - and it wasn't even like I had EVER had spam come through with the old word verification. I don't mind the new blogger interface, although I do ahve to go back to the old interface because I do think that there are some things that are NOT there in the new interface. It has some featrures I do like though and looks snazzier and has some nice options. But yea.....google needs to get their act together. :)
ReplyDeleteInteresting, Funder.... our blog has been going since Aug 2011 with no comment moderation at all and we've never received a single spam comment. We were hit with referrer spam for a while - domar.ru, justforlaughgags.tv etc - which does nothing except skew our stats but I get the feeling google may have finally done something about them now because we've had nothing of that sort for over a month now.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree about the captcha stuff being impossible to read, it drives me mental when I have to use it. The other day I got two words with accented letters and a c with a cedilla..... How the F are ya supposed to do that on an English keyboard without going into Edit and symbols!!!! PFFFTTTTTT!
Hey Funder! Mine is switched off, only WV on! Got Knotty Dogs to check for me!
ReplyDeleteI agree whole heartedly on this!
Thank you, thank you , thank you!
ReplyDeleteFor the right on time PSA, and for the being such a supportive blogging friend - your last comment really started my day off right!
(((♡♡♡)))
I turned off the word verification a few days ago. OMG the spam started immediately, and I acccidentally marked a non-spam post as spam b/c I was in a hurry. But it isn't going to kill anyone and if the person really cares about commenting on my blog that much (doubt it!) I'm sure they will repost their comment. Totally agree with you about the word verification, at least for now. The spammers may wear me down!
ReplyDeleteI got there thru another loop, but surprised to find I have it turned off and I get very little spam. I do have comments older than 14 days go to the moderator but I get very few.
ReplyDeleteI hate the new 2 word and usually I can't read it. Its a guess or I just ask for a new word. Who thinks of these things anyway?
I do not like Wordpress but I am tempted also. I have loved Google, but I swear that FB and Google are both in a race to make their products attractive to 12 yr old video game players and not the rest of us.
ReplyDeleteI hate the new interface too. I just checked and I don't have word verification turned on, but how does Google expect you to change it in the new interface? Blogger is turning into a mess. I didn't like wordpress a couple years ago when I started, but maybe now...
ReplyDeleteThanks Funder. Those two-word unreadable WV's drive be crazy, and until I followed your instructions I didn't even realize I had them turned on for my blog. I now have turned it off, but kept my comment moderation as before.
ReplyDeleteWhen faced with unreadable WVs, I've tried using the audio option - that is even harder to understand than the print one. II've found clicking for new letters several times seems to produce an easier-to-read format, so maybe there is something built in for us "WTF-is-THAT?" people.
I didn't know I had WV until a commenter told me I did. I just turned it off. take THAT blogger! phtphtphtphtpht
ReplyDeletegoogle's kind of like hotmail, always changing things and then they screw things up!!! just get it right and leave it alone!!!!!!

Thanks for doing this. How annoying that 2 word verification was. I thought I was going blind!
ReplyDeleteI just turned the d@mn thing off, and turned on the moderator function. Now, we'll see how it goes!
ReplyDeleteOh the WV was maddening. There must be some sophisticated spamming software out there that could read the old WV. Soon that will be adjusted and then the words will have to be made even harder to read until we all go mad or blind!
ReplyDeleteDone!
ReplyDeletePlease don't go to Wordpress. Posts don't show up properly in google reader.
I have verification off, and the only spam I get is on a very old post. I've got it set so that any comments on a post older than a week go to my email. For some reason, I get spam on one post ("Paj has ulcers") that's over a year old. That's it.
ReplyDeleteYikes! I can't blog at all now. Something about my browser no longer being supported... Will it ever end?????
ReplyDeleteUpdate: in case anyone else is having this issue, I tried going to Firefox and it works now!
ReplyDeleteI HATE the new wv, have to admit I wasn't a huge fan of wv anyway. Also if you don't want to moderate comments its not really a big deal. Blogger does manage to catch quite a few in the spam filter now.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this post! I'm so oblivious I didn't even realize that google made such an annoying change.
