White Death '09

So I rode yesterday, and got way too cold, and really need fleece long johns. And I went to a Christmas party with a horsey gift exchange, and my red halter with lighted blinking reindeer antlers wired to the crownpiece was a huge hit. But the most important thing I have to talk about is SNOOOOW!

Tonight: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 19. West wind between 10 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Monday: Snow. High near 26. South wind 5 to 10 mph becoming east. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.

The most snow I've ever seen in my life was about 8" when I was in college in Virginia. This is mind-boggling. And it already snowed like an inch on us (none down in Reno) this afternoon. Snow pictures tomorrow!

(I hope my horse is warm. I'm sure she is, she's hairy like a yak and she has two huge shelters available, but I can't help but worry, a tiny bit.)

  1. Lol, Truckee is forecasted to get 11-17 inches by the morning :)

    Do you blanket your horses?

I'll throw up a pic on my blog of when i fed earlier with pics of the horses and snow...

It is absolutely FREEZING! way to cold to be riding, except i really need to. If their is a snow day this week (fingers crossed!) i will go riding.... maybe :)

  2. Hahaha, I'm such a Southerner. We got an inch this afternoon and that would be plenty to shut down the whole city of Memphis and send all the kids home from school early. Eleven to seventeen inches and you have to GO TO SCHOOL?

None of the horses at S's have blankets. I think she has one blanket, just in case a horse needs it, but she's been there 10 years and hasn't needed to blanket a healthy horse yet. I am trusting her! Dixie is as fuzzy as a yak, and they can go in the sheds if they want.

I'd love to see a pic of your horses in the snow!

  3. Our forecast for tomorrow night is 11. BRRRRRrrrr! Since our mares don't have a human-built shelter (they do have quite a few evergreen trees to hide under), they are both wearing blankets. Tomorrow, I'll switch to their HEAVY blankets.

Fortunately, it's too cold to sn*w here. Cross fingers it stays that way. I hate weather that requires a shovel.

Funder: go take pix of your yak--with cold temps, her hair will stand straight out and she will look like a grizzly bear!

  4. Fleece long underwear! Cabelas could make a killing if they stocked those!

Cold & snowing in Nebraska, too.

  5. Dude Funder, check out this picture of me in Ohio at school (yes, at the barn between classes) during a blizzard: http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v214/74/42/158200011/n158200011_30116099_798.jpg

School was NOT cancelled that day.

  6. Update: There's like four inches in the parking lot. Cersei and I went and made tracks in it. Snow squeaks when you walk on it! And it's sparkly! And so very quiet!

(It's ok to laugh at me. I know I must sound silly to yall.)

I'm definitely going to check on Dixie tomorrow. I'll get a picture of Her Fluffy Highness! Tammy, I found fleece long underwear, but it's like $60 a pair, ack! Andrea - that's a very good Photoshop but that much snow can't exist south of Canada. ;)
